Cherry blossoms, sushi, geisha girls, Mount Fuji – the not-to-be-missed icons when visiting Japan. All indeed worth seeing (though Fuji eluded us), but the unexpected experiences are what remain in the mind long after a visit to Japan.

Our itinerary began and ended in Tokyo and included four days in Kyoto. We travelled everywhere by train, on a Japan Rail pass, a bargain and a great convenience. The overseas visitor must purchase this abroad. The rail service lives up to its reputation.

Trains arrive and depart on the dot, spotlessly clean. The main line bullet trains are awesome, with comfortable reclining plane seats, reaching speeds that rival air travel. The branch line trains are slower, allowing you to view the passing scenery. Within the cities we used bus, tram or taxi.

As we moved from place to place, we took advantage of the efficient luggage forwarding service, which for a small fee will transport your bag to your next hotel, leaving you free to break your journey and explore places of interest en route.

Travelling independently, not in a group, with no knowledge of Japanese, my friend and I nevertheless managed to get around without much difficulty. The basic infrastructure of public transport and accommodation is often well above Western standards.

The Japanese are obsessed with cleanliness, wearing face masks against air pollution, providing moist warm towels at every eating place. Plumbing is impeccable and tap water everywhere is drinkable.

Where else would you find the computerized toilet-cum-bidet, with controls for warming the seat? No litter. In the towns the waiter or taxi driver usually knows a few words of English, but good speakers are few and far between. Signs in English can be found in the main centers but not in outlying areas.

Now the story can be told. You know, don’t you, that the gorgeous Deepika Padukone shimmered down the red carpet at Cannes on Friday wearing a saree by designer Rohit Bal. There’s a reason why she chose the Indian national costume for her first major international appearance. The actress told BT from the French Riviera, “When I started modelling, I promised myself that whenever I attend an international event, I’d wear a saree and not western clothes. I get enough opportunities at home to wear western clothes. When I’m seen at an international event I’d rather be fully Indian.” She cleverly declined to comment on the fact that Cannes regular Aishwarya Rai Bachchan appeared on the red carpet in a gown. “I wouldn’t like to comment on others,” said Deepika, adding that she finds the saree very sensuous and “it felt good to be so Indian so far away from home”. However, the goss is that Cannes firsttimer Deepika had made discreet inquiries about what Ash would be wearing before deciding her own look. No matter, the two lovely Indian actresses made spectators’ day at the film festival by proving that variety is indeed the spice and curry of life.

Israel's four seas (the Mediterranean, the Sea of Galilee, The Dead Sea, and the Red Sea) offer an amazing variety of swimming experiences. The beaches of Israel look beautiful, but be careful about going in the water. Unusually strong riptides, whirlpools, and undertows along the Mediterranean coast can claim the strongest swimmer. Never swim in unguarded areas. Along much of the coast, especially north of Tel Aviv, the beaches seem sandy, but a few steps into the surf, and you're standing on a rocky shelf -- not a good place to be when waves come crashing down. Pollution is also a serious problem, as it is throughout the Mediterranean. Israel's beach standards are much higher than those of most Mediterranean countries, but on many days, garbage from other countries swirls along the coast. At Nahariya, Akko, and the Poleg Nature Reserve (8km/5 miles south of Netanya), which have no sewage-treatment plants, I would hesitate to put a toe, no less my head, in the water. Expect beaches to be lively; Israelis play compulsive paddleball on any stretch of beach they're on, regardless of sleeping sunbathers in the line of fire. And watch out for sea urchins and stinging coral in the Red Sea and the burning medusas (jellyfish) that attack the Mediterranean beaches in July.
